The growth cycle of this year’s corn crop is coming to a close, but the threat of weeds is not going away.
As the popularity of no-till production gains momentum and resistant weeds become more common, winter weed growth has increased across the Corn Belt.
Chickweed is a common winter annual weed.
The most difficult winter annual weeds include marestail, henbit, purple deadnettle and chickweed. They can start to emerge shortly after harvest. To manage these weeds, growers should scout for them soon after the crop is out of the field and throughout fall.
A high weed density is a good indication your customers should implement a herbicide program in fall to mitigate early season weed competition in spring. For effective control, use a residual herbicide with a fall burndown. A fall application of SureStart® II herbicide will help provide residual weed control in winter and into early spring so fields are clean at planting.
